Ministry of Homeland Security Abuses Icelandic Woman

In America under the neocon fascists, this is how we treat young mothers:

From the Iceland Review Online:

Icelandic woman Erla Ósk Arnardóttir Lilliendahl said she received poor treatment when she traveled to New York on Sunday. She said she was interrogated at JFK airport, transferred to prison and deported after 24 hours due to an earlier visa violation.

Lilliendahl told Morgunbladid she never objected to leaving the country, but is dissatisfied with the treatment she received.

“Many seem to think that I’m some paranoid housewife who wouldn’t accept being thrown out of the US. But that’s just not the case. I never objected to being deported, just to the things that happened until I was put onboard the plane returning to Iceland,” Lilliendahl said.

According to Lilliendahl, she had to undergo a physical examination in the prison, answer humiliating questions, did not receive any food or drink for 14 hours, was not permitted to make any phone calls and her family was made to believe she was still at the airport.

“If this description is accurate, our behavior towards Miss Arnardóttir was certainly unacceptable and US authorities should apologize to her immediately,” Eugene R. Fidell, who lectures at the law department at Yale University, told Morgunbladid.

The reason for this ordeal is that Lilliendahl stayed in the US for three weeks beyond her permitted visa stay in 1995. She visited the US again in 1995-1996.

Lilliendahl said she had therefore not been aware that her violation had been that serious. “I would naturally have taken the necessary precautions [before traveling to the US again] if I had realized that,” Lilliendahl said.

She should have applied for a special visa, according to information from the US Embassy in Reykjavík.

When approached by Morgunbladid, spokesperson for the US Customs and Border Protection Janet Rapaport said that she could not comment on individual cases.

From Lillendahl’s blog (translated by Gunnar Tómasson):

During the last twenty-four hours I have probably experienced the greatest humiliation to which I have ever been subjected. During these last twenty-four hours I have been handcuffed and chained, denied the chance to sleep, been without food and drink and been confined to a place without anyone knowing my whereabouts, imprisoned. Now I am beginning to try to understand all this, rest and review the events which began as innocently as possible.

Last Sunday I and a few other girls began our trip to New York. We were going to shop and enjoy the Christmas spirit. We made ourselves comfortable on first class, drank white wine and looked forward to go shopping, eat good food and enjoy life. When we landed at JFK airport the traditional clearance process began. We were screened and went on to passport control. As I waited for them to finish examining my passport I heard an official say that there was something which needed to be looked at more closely and I was directed to the work station of Homeland Security. There I was told that according to their records I had overstayed my visa by 3 weeks in 1995. For this reason I would not be admitted to the country and would be sent home on the next flight. I looked at the official in disbelief and told him that I had in fact visited New York after the trip in 1995 without encountering any difficulties. A detailed interrogation session ensued. I was photographed and fingerprinted. I was asked questions which I felt had nothing to do with the issue at hand. I was forbidden to contact anyone to advise of my predicament and although I was invited at the outset to contact the Icelandic consul or embassy, that invitation was later withdrawn. I don’t know why. I was then made to wait while they sought further information, and sat on a chair before the authority for 5 hours. I saw the officials in this section handle other cases and it was clear that these were men anxious to demonstrate their power. Small kings with megalomania. I was careful to remain completely cooperative, for I did not yet believe that they planned to deport me because of my “crime”. When 5 hours had passed and I had been awake for 24 hours, I was told that they were waiting for officials who would take me to a kind of waiting room. There I would be given a bed to rest in, some food and I would be searched. What they thought they might find I cannot possibly imagine. Finally guards appeared who transported me to the new place. I saw the bed as if in a mirage, for I was absolutely exhausted. What turned out was something else. I was taken to another office exactly like the one where I had been before and once again a long wait ensued. In all, it turned out to be 5 hours. At this office all my things were taken from me. I succeeded in sending a single sms to worried relatives and friends when I was granted a bathroom break. After that the cell phone was taken from me. After I had been sitting for 5 hours I was told that they were now waiting for guards who would take me to a place where I could rest and eat. Then I was placed in a cubicle which looked like an operating room. Attached to the walls were 4 steel plates, probably intended to serve as bed and a toilet. I was exhausted, tired and hungry. I didn’t understand the officials’ conduct, for they were treating me like a very dangerous criminal. Soon thereafter I was removed from the cubicle and two armed guards placed me up against a wall. A chain was fastened around my waist and I was handcuffed to the chain. Then my legs were placed in chains. I asked for permission to make a telephone call but they refused. So secured, I was taken from the airport terminal in full sight of everybody. I have seldom felt so bad, so humiliated and all because I had taken a longer vacation than allowed under the law.

They would not tell me where they were taking me. The trip took close to one hour and although I couldn’t see clearly outside the vehicle I knew that we had crossed over into New Jersey. We ended up in front of a jail. I could hardly believe that this was happening. Was I really about to be jailed? I was led inside in the chains and there yet another interrogation session ensued. I was fingerprinted once again and photographed. I was made to undergo a medical examination, I was searched and then I was placed in a jail cell. I was asked absurd questions such as: When did you have your last period? What do you believe in? Have you ever tried to commit suicide?

I was completely exhausted, tired and cold. Fourteen hours after I had landed I had something to eat and drink for the first time. I was given porridge and bread. But it did not help much. I was afraid and the attitude of all who handled me was abysmal to say the least. They did not speak to me as much as snap at me. Once again I asked to make a telephone call and this time the answer was positive. I was relieved but the relief was short-lived. For the telephone was set up for collect calls only and it was not possible to make overseas calls. The jailguard held my cell phone in his hand. I explained to him that I could not make a call from the jail telephone and asked to be allowed to make one call from my own phone. That was out of the question. I spent the next 9 hours in a small, dirty cell. The only thing in there was a narrow steel board which extended out from the wall, a sink and toilet. I wish I never experience again in my life the feeling of confinement and helplessness which I experienced there.

I was hugely relieved when, at last, I was told that I was to be taken to the airport, that is to say until I was again handcuffed and chained. Then I could take no more and broke down and cried. I begged them at least to leave out the leg chains but my request was ignored. When we arrived at the airport, another jail guard took pity on me and removed the leg chains. Even so I was led through a full airport terminal handcuffed and escorted by armed men. I felt terrible. On seeing this, people must think that there goes a very dangerous criminal. In this condition I was led up into the Icelandair waiting room, and was kept handcuffed until I entered the embarkation corridor. I was completely run down by all this in both body and spirit. Fortunately I could count on good people and both Einar (the captain) and the crew did all which they could to try to assist me. My friend Auður was in close contact with my sister and the consul and embassy had been contacted. However, all had received misleading information and all had been told that I had been detained at the airport terminal, not that I had been put in jail. Now the Foreign Ministry is looking into the matter and I hope to receive some explanation why I was treated this way.

As disgusting as it is to have to say this, if people from abroad are smart they will no longer come to the U.S., because our country is being taken over by Nazi-minded thugs and slave handlers who presume everyone guilty and believe everyone is a criminal, citizen or non-citizen, except for those who are their puppet-masters, the true globalists. Everyone who believes in freedom, and that would definitely have to be the majority of people worldwide, is a thought criminal to the slave master, freedom destroying, true criminal globalists and their enforcers.

Another shining, disgusting and vivid example of why the Department of Homeland Security needs to be totally dismantled NOW! Excuse me, what threat did this woman possess to the security of America? Oh that’s right - Absolutely NONE. Just like the toy store owner who had the “wrong” rubic cube on her shelf (remember that from months ago? I hope she is okay…)

Why don’t you Homeland Security people do some homeland security? Like securing our border with Mexico… Is it because homeland security is not your primary mission????

And to all you corporations - You might want to begin to think about how stories like this are going to stop potential shoppers from coming to the USA and spending their money.

    To Ms. Lilliendahl,

I can only speak for myself, but I would like to apologize to you for the treatment you received. I hate what this country, my country, has become. I have not now nor ever will vote for the kind of people that are currently, and illegally, in charge. But because this is my country, I still feel responsible for the treatment she received.

I, like many other Americans, are working very hard to see that the next election brings changes that will restore America to the kind of country it used to be.

    My sincerest apologies,

    Robert Ludwig

Wow…..What cowards to treat a women like that. Homeland security sounds like insecure thugs. I think the Nazi regime used tactics like that.

I have friends from Canada who are planning a trip to Disneyland this winter, which I will discourage them against. All foreigners should be aware of the brutal tactics that Homeland “Insecurity” are implimenting.

remember true “Security” is a myth and unattainable. so every time you see the word “security” in a name or event, just replace it with the word “control” to get its true meaning; Dept. of Homeland Control, Travel Control agency, etc..

Yet another example of the psychotic animals that have seized control of almost everything in this country. Another disgusting act of state terrorism against innocent civilians. And all the while the borders remain open with 10,000 illegals a day pouring in from Mexico and God knows where else. Murderers, drug smugglers, sex offenders, mentally disturbed, you name it, they come in over the southwestern border - but THATS O.K.!!! No, - we have to torment THIS WOMAN who came to our country to spend her money and have a fun vacation. I’M SICK AND TIRED OF IT!!! I’am SO ashamed to be an American today. I’m putting everything I have into Ron Paul’s campaign. Things have GOT to change!!!

  13. Gregory on December 18th, 2007

Wow-And the Illegal Mexicans who come into our country without a passport or permission are allow to live here for years raping our women and children, killing our men and undermining our Constitution without being questioned. The entire Chain of Command at Homeland should be fired no matter who they are! I wonder if these are the same chaps that got a degree over the Internet in the field of Homeland Security?

….And, “WalksTheLand”, your Canadian friends may get more of, or (much?) worse than, such brutal, Nazi tactics coming back into Canada then they do from the U.S. gestapo on the U.S. side of the border; because your version of “Homeland (Stupid/Ignorant) Gestapo” are getting pretty bad too; i.e./e.g., Alex Jones’ and others much worse treatment at the hands of the Canadian authorities when they went to cover and report on the Bilderberg gathering in Ottawa last year.

  17. Olafur Skorrdal on December 18th, 2007

Once America was my dream. As a child, I hoped to go there to live, to see the beautiful nature - to get a chance to be free. Not that I’m enslaved here in Iceland, but, my country didn’t have the same potentials as America had. As I grew up, and I started to follow politics and read and listen, I started to get second thoughts. After mid 90’s, I stopped wanting to live there, but still wanted to visit and get to know the country. Now, I keep as far away as I possibly can - I think I might be put in jail.

I made a video about the war in Iraq 2 years ago, and since then I have been monitored by computers at .gov (Government) and .mil (Military) domains. It is very painful for me, to watch the “Land of the Free - and the Home of the Brave” become enslaved, and the rest of the free world, sucked into the whole lie. We - the people - are the power, why should we let some greedy politicians steal our democracy and take away our freedom? Our birthright? It’s ours to stop this - and I have asked my self time and time again, why you haven’t stopped Bush? Is there a real democracy? Is there a Republic? Or is it just all a big lie?

  18. Ezra on December 18th, 2007

I think this treatment is horrible. I would like to apologize but, I would like to let homeland security come to my home and attempt to raid me. I am a fuckin terrorist!!! You had better believe that your government is taking steps to insure you and all of your families are seen as one!!!! Hey how about that non existent NAFTA superhighway….. GLEN BECK YOU TRAITOR. The guy has secret service guarding him!!! The hell are we paying taxes for that ass master for?!?! We can’t sit back and talk anymore we need to take action I hope everyone in here has a strong stomach and even stronger will power because I have a feeling this is going to get really bad if Ron Paul doesnt get elected “GOD FORBID”. JUST REMEMBER THIS HOMELAND SECURITY …. THERE ARE 300 MILLION OF US. There are 5 guns per house hold on average in the United States in a fortified city environment even an inexperienced marksman can take out 7 soldiers before they get him. So… lets do the math there are 40,000 Homeland security and 200,000 Blackwater troops…. I am betting even if only 400,000 Citizens are angy enough to fight you physically that would be enough. Keep that in mind the next time you decide to pick up one of our fellow human beings and treat them as poorly as you did this woman I dont care what country she is from its not right to treat anyone this way. I am also angry with the people who stood by and watched!!! Indifference to evil is evil as well! Ron Paul for pres!

Some in Iceland have been trying for a quite some time to point out to people over here what is happening in the land of the free and brave and how it is gradually changing to a police state, by purpose as it seems, but have had little attension until now or simply ridicule, nobody has been taking it very serious as they should have, because if this running down the dark street of tiranny tactics and stormtroops police thugs tasering even innocent people(glad that did not happen in this case) and peaceful protestors as frequently reported last few years, does not get turned around then not only the good people of United States of America are in deep shit IMHO, we in Iceland to.

Are my fellow Americans awake now? Thank God many of you have a clue. For the rest of you coach potatoes…Google; Ron Paul…then voter fraud, I too have my volunteer work planned for the next year! If we don’t force change, the above treatment will be used on US soon. My Deepest sympathy to Erla Ósk Arnardóttir Lilliendahl.

As so many Icelanders, I’ve always loved United States of America, the people, the land and the principles the nation has been funded on, ever since I first visited the country when I was 6. Now in my 40’s I’ve regularly traveled to the States, both on business and pleasure, and always had a fine experience and enjoyed great hospitality of American people. Therefore it’s a huge disappointment how things have evolved during the last years, and how the public opinion has turned against this great nation, mainly due to an inept leadership.

It is though encouraging for me to read what wast majority of Americans who have commented here, apologizing for their nation and/or declared their disgrace for the abuse Ms. Erla had to endure from their officials at JFK. This confirms to me my opinion that a huge majority of the American people condemn the conduct of their government, as well as it keeps live in my hope that America will turn back to normal in the near future.

I want to thank Erla for making her story public, by that she has served all freedom loving people, whether American, Icelandic or of other nations. It has disseminated widely over the Internet, and has already forced the DHS to respond to their conduct, surprisingly to many.

According to news yesterday in Iceland, the Foreign Ministry received a letter from the DHS, signed by the Deputy Secretary Paul A. Schneider, where they regret the treatment Erla got, admit it was out of proportion, and that they will review processes in the light of this incident. We can also thank Mrs. Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir, Foreign Minister of Iceland, and the U.S. Ambassador in Iceland, Mrs. Carol van Voorst, a great representative for USA. Hopefully these three women have started something which will improve the situation for all of us.

It was also mentioned in the news, that several American lawyers have contacted Erla encouraging her and offered their help to sue the US government. Hopefully that will happen, since it would likely reinforce the movement to re-establish America as the “Land of the free, and home of the brave”.

Well, sorry to throw a “monkey wrench” into all of this positive thinking, “hopefulness” and belief(s) that things in this regard will supposedly get better, but DHS will NOT make it truly better. Sure, they will put on a good show, and talk and write the good talk and “encouraging” writing(s), but it will only get worse. What they’re doing right now as far as this kind of abuse is a model that they’re building on to intentionally intensify the “control grid” more and more as time “evolves”. They have every intention to control us and “foreign” visitors in ever-increasing ways, and to not de-intensify it in any way(s) except cosmetically. The U.S. is now almost, and very soon will be, the equivalent of “East Germany”. Be smart, and if you can, get out of the U.S. while you still can if you live here, and don’t come here even to visit for a short time if you live abroad.

Homeland Security is a joke. They are a waste of tax payers money, giving more unneccessary duties to police officers. The sole reason of this department is to wean out all those who are trying to come into this country illegally. But the cases are so low with the amount of workforce they have they expanded the search to anyone they can get their hands on, even american citizens. The sad part is that these high school educated officers are left to rely on their instincts of weather someone posses a threat, such as if someone has an extra long name or a really hot girlfriend (get what Im saying). Than they enforce their federal right to “trap” that person (initially w/o reason) in a locked up cramped waiting room for an 1-2 hours. This process frustrates passengers because those 1-2 hours causes them to miss connecting flights, but even more so lose their right to communicate with close family members who were behind them in line of the security clearance. This department has been given way too much rights. I know because more and more US citizens are being targeted now than ever before. This needs to be fixed right away, our civil liberties should have never been given to the targeting squad. All because of the scared few who overexagerated over the effects of 911. Hopefully the new administration rectifies this problem by scalling back on its spending.
