FBI Steals Family’s Life Savings

Luther Ricks and his wife worked most of their lives at a steel foundry in Ohio. Not trusting of banks, they say they’ve lived frugally, and managed to save more than $400,000 over the years, which they kept in a safe in their home.

Last summer, two burglars broke into Ricks’ home. He shot and killed one of them. Police determined he acted in self-defense, and cleared him of any criminal wrongdoing. But local police did find a small amount of marijuana in Ricks’ home, which Ricks says he uses to manage the pain of his arthritis and a hip replacement surgery. Ricks was never charged for the marijuana. But finding it in his home was enough for city police to confiscate Ricks and his wife’s life savings under drug war asset forfeiture laws. Oddly enough, the FBI then stepped in, and claimed the money for itself.

Consistent with asset forfeiture laws, the federal government now says Ricks has to prove he earned the money legitimately in order to get it back. Of course, he doesn’t have dated receipts going back thirty-plus years. And he can’t hire a lawyer–the government has of his money.

Also, under asset forfeiture laws, even if Ricks were able to prove in court that he earned the money legitimately, he, not the government, would have to absorb the court costs.

    This sucks and i’m totally on their side, BUT…

    If your going to fight the system you need to STAY AWAY FROM THEIR DRUGS!!! They’re meant to trap you! I don’t care if it’s for medical purposes - there are 100’s of other natural cures for pain. Using marijuana when you have something to hide from the government is retarded. Use something else.

    This is what happens when you play along with government. When they decided to confiscate the money, lead should have been flying. Marajuana is less addictive than nicotine. It is a scam that the government have imposed on the people who are willing to submit to their rule. I got plenty of gold and silver at my house and I dare the government to confiscate that in front of me and live to tell about it. There is a reason the Founding Fathers left us the Second Amendment as a right that protects all other amendments. Use it or loose it!!!

    Not sure what the laws are like in Ohio, but in Oregon, if there was no evidence that the Ricks were intending to sell any of their stash and they had less than an oz., they may have been fined but the police & FBI would have no business confiscating their savings. If this had happened in the NW we’d probably be protesting in the streets for this couple. We love our herb out here! Some of the people that responded to this have said some typical dumb American things and probably have never responsibly and appropriately enjoyed some MJ and do not know how much more efficiently it can manage pain or nausea than some common prescription medications. Does Vicodin grow out of the ground?

    My heart goes out to this couple who lost years of savings over a little bit of bud.
