Real ID: From “No Fly” to “No Drive” Lists?

ABC breaks the ice for us: in the future, and not too far into it, the process of getting and renewing a driver’s license will become more difficult, stressful, and fraught with all manner of unnecessary nonsense supposedly designed to protect us from terrorists, or rather CIA patsies paraded about to frighten us into submission, and as well prevent illegals from taking to the roads, never mind Alaska, Connecticut, Idaho, Louisiana, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Utah, Washington and West Virginia allow illegals to hold a license, thus demonstrating the above is little more than a threadbare excuse.

Of course, when the rubber meets the road, we discern the real reason — a national ID, complete with RFID and possibly biometrics, is all about easing us into the control grid.

According to apparatchik Michael Chertoff and the commissariat of Homeland Security, the whole affair is a matter of national security. “We are now over six years from 9/11,” Chertoff impatiently declared, “we live every day with the problems of false identification. Simply kicking this problem down the road year after year after year for further discussion, further debate and analysis is a time-tested Washington way of smothering any proposal with process.”

In other words, never mind that most people oppose Real ID and civil libertarians warn of vexing abuse, Chertoff and the neocons are itching to get us all in lumbering databases, the next step in a plan that will ultimately result in the chipping of the population at large.

“I think the time has come to bite the bullet,” Chertoff continued, “and get the kind of secure identification I am convinced the American public wants to have,” or rather the government tells them they must have, as most people hate the idea and eighteen states have passed legislation rejecting the law and Congress has refused to put any money into implementing it.

But never mind. It is a win-win situation for AOL, Microsoft, Verizon and Yahoo, all who stand to clean up if Chertoff manages to force his card on Americans at large. “The Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) sent a letter to Congress this week begging for more federal funding for Real ID,” Privacy Digest noted last October. In addition to the above corporate culprits, we can add Digimarc and Northrop Grumman, “companies that specialize in creating high-tech ID cards, as well as Choicepoint and LexisNexis, data brokers that make their money selling personal information about you to advertisers and the government. These companies stand to make millions in contracts from states who are struggling with a federal mandate to overhaul their licensing systems and share more data by the May 2008 deadline,” a date right around the corner, thus explaining Chertoff’s impatience.

“Real ID is so unpopular because in addition to being a $23 billion unfunded mandate, it will build a vast national database of personal information, expose us to a greater risk of identity theft, and move us ever closer to a total surveillance society.’

It may also be a way to keep “terrorists” off the roadways — not the Muslim cave dwelling brand of terrorist, mind you, but the kind that exercises his or her right to petition the government under that rusty old anachronism, the First Amendment to the Bill of Rights of the Constitution.

As we know, thousands of Americans are on the Federal Aviation Administration’s No-Fly List and the FBI’s Terrorist Screening Center has compiled a terrorist watch list of over 700,000 people. Moreover, as Dave Lindorff writes, the government is in the business of passing this information out to private companies. “The Wall Street Journal reported that the FBI made its list of people with even remote links to terrorism — having associated, perhaps inadvertently, with a terror suspect, for example — available to a wide range of private companies, from banks and rental-car companies to casinos.”

And who exactly are these primary terrorists, the ones you don’t want to associate with, that is if you ever want to fly again? They are “law-abiding Americans” who were detained and questioned — we used to call this harassment — “based on their political viewpoints,” according to Nancy Chang, a senior litigation attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights. “I think what they are doing is harassing people who are opposing the war and publicly speaking out against administration policy,” John Dear, a Jesuit priest and member of the Catholic peace group Pax Christi, told Lindorff.

Back in 2003, we learned that the FBI “collected extensive information on the tactics, training and organization of antiwar demonstrators and … advised local law enforcement officials to report any suspicious activity at protests to its counterterrorism squads,” the New York Times reported. Of course, this is simply a continuation of the FBI’s COINTELPRO, initiated in the 1960s to “neutralize” the opposition — i.e., render activists not only politically impotent, but often wreck their lives as well.

In 2006, we discovered that COINTELPRO didn’t go away, as the official history would have it, but lives on to this day at the Pentagon. “An antiterrorist database used by the Defense Department in an effort to prevent attacks against military installations included intelligence tips about antiwar planning meetings held at churches, libraries, college campuses and other locations,” reported the New York Times. The database, known as Talon, “showed that the military used a variety of sources to collect intelligence leads on antiwar protests, including an agent in the Department of Homeland Security, Google searches on the Internet and e-mail messages forwarded by apparent informants with ties to protest groups.”

In short, the FBI and the Pentagon are still in the business of compiling lists and checking them twice, and many if not most of these people end up grounded, as noted above.

Now we have Chertoff and ABC telling us the same rules may soon apply to driving a car. As Chertoff told ABC, the Real ID is about preventing “terrorists” from driving — with illegal immigration tacked on as a selling point — and, if the behavior of the FBI and the Pentagon are any indicator, the real terrorists are not Muslim guys who were trained on U.S. military bases and had a fondness for cruising topless bars, but are antiwar activists and other troublemakers.

Soon enough, many of us – those who believe the Constitution says what it means — may be reduced to walking to work and the grocery store… that is until a Real ID card will be required to hold job or buy a loaf of bread.

I’m already on the “No Drive” list… voluntarily! With what’s coming, I have absolutely no desire to have a state drivers license, or any form of government I.D. other than a passport, ever again! They can have them all; and, in the meantime, I put my pedal to the mountain bike, and I get around and accomplish my errands, including buying and bringing food home, just fine! My driving a motor vehicle days are over with, and I say “good riddance”!

There’s really only one problem: History is indeed being repeated, and the “Good American Nazis” are coming out of the woodwork in droves, having been scared into it by all of the fear-mongering lies, and driven (pun intended) to it by all of the hateful false nationalism and pro-war- and mass-murder- mongering that has so many of them all lathered up into Nazi-German-like fanaticism and vile hatred of all those who don’t blindly follow the Pied Piper like they do, and are therefore “undesirable”.

These hate-monger are now at the stage of smiling at you and appearing all “friendly and “nice” while they stick the knife in and twist it; but they, nevertheless, encompass such people, like myself’s, quick and unholy demise. So, though I’ve already had car tires slashed because I blew the whistle on a law-violating apartment manager, I’ve now had one of my bike tires slashed, and I think it was done by the bike shop when I went in to get a flat in the same tire fixed five days before!

To make a “short story” even shorter, all I had to say was something like, “I don’t see how anyone could still be ‘for’ Bush”, and that’s all it took for the “apparently-friendly” false patriot(s) to encompass my doom! Can you imagine if the tire had exploded when I was going really fast on my bike?! They would have gotten their way, and I WOULD be “toast”. But, blessing of myself by God, the tire blew up when I was laying down watching a movie!

Is this not a prime example of the kind of history-repeating insanity that is going to be more and more on the rise?? I mean, isn’t it really amazing that someone, or more than one, will literally try to see to it that you are physically harmed just because of some fairly innocuous political statement of a persuasion that differs from theirs, and criticizes their false “god(s)”?! You see, by all of this insanity, which has really only just begun, the government has already made it so no one is safe, exactly the way they want it!!

When they ask me for my “papers”, I don’t have any because I cannot accept the U.S. being turned into “Nazi America”, having to be official, unquestioningly obedient members of “the party”, and of supposedly no longer being able to exercise my First Amendment DUTIES to question, dissent and seek redress from the government’s now-increasingly oppressive and repressive grievances that they are perpetrating against We the People!

Americans who are pro- U.S. Bill of Rights and Constitution, and who refuse to stop exercising their First Amendment DUTIES to stand up against all of this Fourth Reich bullshit that is very fast taking over our once ostensibly free country, are NOT “terrorists” and/or “con men or women”! Ron Paul needs our help.

DHS was smart to postpone implementation requirements of Real ID. This was done to remove Ron Paul’s Real ID talking point and put Americans back to sleep.

Now we need to re-focus our energies on the National Health Information Network (NHIN); a “network of networks” designed to link all medical records (100 Million) of Americans with supercomputers at the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA).

ALL physicians who take Medicare patients will be required to make patient records available electronically for ALL patients, even if you pay with cash. Physicians will become the new spys for the superfatherland and have a duty to put your medical history on-line for this national wiretap of your medical records.

NHIN has been condemned over and over by health care privacy groups. We need to spread the word about the NHIN and have it condemned by Dr. Paul, M.D. at the appropriate time.

HALT the NHIN!

Is this any surprise. people? I just finished reading a new article on World Net Daily that the Bush Cabal is now openly pushing to take away ALL private citizens handguns in the form of another one of their “bills”. We have been pushed right to the wall and into it. SCREW them! There is also an article that Paypal has been strongarmed into starting to turn over private personal information to the IRS. Damn the government to Hell and back. I refuse to co operate in any way that I can. No car, no paper trail,
no bank account, no paper trail, no credit card/s and paper trail, same thing with any type of check card, debit card, or ATM card. Same thing for any type of store credit cards and loyalty cards. Cash only, housing, all bills in someone else’s name, or under a phony name and identity. No post office box or paper trail, you get the idea.

As they have been lying, disloyal, and dishonest with us, so should we be with them.

I have not had a car for three years, by choice.I live in the city and get around just fine.With gas prices and now the I.D. card, well, Me and my wife will continue to walk, its good for you, take a bus .My drivers License is no longer good, I will get an I.D before the National I.D. card is a must and this will be my last I.D.
People think we are strange cause they see us walking everywhere, we smile as we wave to them at the gas pump.
We have never had much money as we are in ministry work, we know how to live on soup and bread, in some ways I feel the poor will be more prepared for whats coming, what do we need? as a Minister what do I want? nothing this life has to offer, this is a good thing.We want to help others and will do so till the end, but want has gone years ago.When we are in a money meltdown we will not be the ones jumping out of third story windows. LOL.

We will live under ground when the time comes, as my body will never host an RFID chip, never.It will be heaven or a FEMA camp, or a FEMA camp and than to heaven.
I think everyone should live on less, walk if they can and get ready.

These are all good comments. But, again, the new threat is the National Health Information Network (NHIN). Are you getting this? A national database of the medical records of Americans, fully avaialble to law enforcement and the National Security Agency?

I find it curious that so many people decry a database about your social security number at the DMV but are still asleep on having all your medical records turned over to the state. What gives?

I will not accept a Real ID card…period. If that makes me a disloyal citizen, then so be it.
As for the other issues my denial will present, I have no desire to fly anyway, and have no real desire to enter a Federal Building or Courthouse. I find the latter an exercise in sheer frustration anyway.
When it does become a requirement to have a Real ID card to be allowed to drive, I will simply quit driving and save all my gas money, insurance money, and other costs associated with owning a motor vehicle. I can use the extra money to start my own garden and raise my own food.
When it becomes a condition of employment, I am very prepared to give up my job (which I hate anyway)! I will find myself a good heavy jacket, and a nice tent and sleeping bag and travel the country looking for pockets and communities of organized resistance.
I will continue to be a REAL AMERICAN until I am a dead American.
It beats living under a system that dictates when I can draw my next breath or what words I am able to utter.
I choose freedom, and I will not give mine up!

Barb Clark, R.N., N.P.–Good post, good questions. I will address them as best as possible. Every point you brought up is right on target. We have all
been sucked into the mainstream of medical doctors, hospitals, etc. It is long overdue time for us to take a huge step back and take a long hard look at alternative medicine, including and perhaps most esp, herbal medicine.

Personally, I have taken to using certain herbal medicines as much as possible in place of going to the local clinic and doctors whenever possible.

Examples: Colds/flu–lemon,honey(raw), garlic(fresh), Purple Coneflower
Cuts, scrapes,wounds(including infected wounds)spider bites(brown
recluse,black widow,etc)–Goldenseal Root Powder,Myrrh powder.
Bleeding–Shepards Purse
Fever reducer–lemon,honey(raw), garlic(fresh)
Calming agent–Passionflower, Chamommile
Rejuvinater–Ginsing(Panex Koren is best)

It’s long overdue time for us to start becoming more pro active in our safety and health. Eat better(stop the hormone injected meats,eat more
fruits and vegetables(organic is best), lay off the soft drinks, drink
more filtered water and juices,you get the idea. Go to alternate forms
of less traceable transportation whenever and whereever possible(bicycles,
motercycles,horse and buggy if possible.

It’s really sad to see what tyranny has become in this Nation. We as a people once had a backbone and would fight at the drop of a pin when our liberties were threaten. Now we’re dumbed down, fat, lazy and rationalize everything. People, it shouldn’t gotten this bad in the first place. We forgot liberty and all drank from the cup of tyranny with intoxication. Now, we all will sadly pay the price! As for me and my house, I did everything possible to wake the sheep even though I was laughed at, lost friends and family members over speaking the truth unashamed!

DHS has a stranglehold over individual states rights to decide their own driving and flying laws since Bush (of the Bush-Kennedy’s killers fame) has taken control of the states governors in the event of an emergency, and with the revelation from Jesse Ventura that CIA agents sits atop all states govenors and dictate what goes on, I’d say this country was overthrown when Kennedy was shot and finacially overthrown in 1913. Now, is the culmination of their plans and we have a rare chance to turn the world around lets not let them down.

285 Million StuuuuPid Americans who want to do nothing but cry and complain about WHY do we have to have a National I.D. Card??? Just freeking say NO!!!!! Soooooo Simple… Besides? driving an “automobile” is already a right as we can go anywhere we choose, anytime we choose unrestricted, the U.S.Supreme Court has already established this in numerous cases regarding driving. It’s only a “privilege” when a driver needs a license to drive when in the use of COMMERCIAL driving, as where you “earn a living with the license”…Americans need to freeking wake up and (read the laws we already have in place. We DONT need a license to drive, We DONT need a SSN to live and work in the US (the SSA will tell you this if you ask in writing), and We DONT have to pay taxes. Knowledge is power!
